Why oil paint
Impasto is the old technique of laying paint on so thick that it keeps the shape of the brush. It catches light. It has ridges, edges and small happy accidents.
On a bright, flat, modern screen, that texture does something a photo can't: it gives your eye somewhere to rest. It feels less like a file and more like an object.
